Part Two: Life on the streets
In Part Two of We Are The Children, you'll hear Demon's intimate account of living on the streets of the Bronx. Coming out can attract abuse. LGBT youth are more likely to run away or be kicked out. And New York is a magnet for runaway gays from all over America, promising acceptance and a new life. What they find is a promise broken.
In New York, as elsewhere, LGBT youth are at a higher risk of HIV, suicide attempts, and substance abuse. Some turn to whats called survival crimes: sex work, robbery and drug dealing. The likelihood of being involved in the prison system is increased. In the juvenile justice system in New York City, an estimated 4% to 10% of the juvenile delinquent population identify as LGBT. Transgender youth who do sex work on the street are the most at risk because of transphobia from both customers and police officers.
In this part, you'll see some beautiful photography by Brooklyn-based photographer, Kate Kunath.
