Part One: Irma and Demon
This is a film about family. When your real one doesn't want you any more.
Here, in New York's poorest borough, teenagers follow strict rules: boys are men; women must behave like women. So you want to come out as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender in the Bronx? Be prepared to be kicked out. Some estimates say that up to a half of New Yorks street kids are LGBT. Many originate from the Bronx. The statistics are grim. This group lives through more violence, HIV infection and drug use than any other on the streets.
In part one, you'll be introduced to Irma and Demon, two young women who have been homeless because of their sexualities.
This film was made for my masters in broadcast journalism at New York University; in this section you'll meet the good people at the Bronx Community Pride Centre.
